Moses Austin of Missouri brought lead to the Mississippi River near here for making shot and for shipment, and John Pitcairn of Pennsylvania, as one of the founders of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, laid the foundation for more extensive exploitation of the region's high grade St. Peter sandstone in the manufacturing of plate glass. The area also honors others who pioneered local industries and contributed greatly to their development.
