Sourland Mountain Preserve is a 3,025-acre protected area on Sourland Mountain in central New Jersey, spanning Hillsborough and Montgomery townships. Preserved largely through major donations from the Farr family, it offers heavily wooded, rocky terrain in a suburban setting. The Ridge Trail has long been its best-known route, and later trail additions expanded access to Roaring Brook and other sections. Visitors encounter steep rocky slopes, exposed boulders, and, on clear days, distant views toward Manhattan from the pipeline corridor. The preserve is also important for wildlife and geology, with foxes, deer, coyotes, songbirds, and rock formations tied to the Newark Basin and the same igneous event that formed the Palisades Sill and Watchung Mountains.
