Zebulon Montgomery Pike, born at Lamberton, now Trenton, New Jersey, on January 5, 1779, pursued a notable career as a soldier-explorer and led his historic expedition to the southwest. He enlisted as a cadet in his father's regiment in 1794, became an ensign in 2nd Infantry on March 3, 1799, 1st Lieut. on April 24, 1800, Captain on Aug. 12, 1806, Major on May 3, 1808, Lieut.-Col. on Dec. 31, 1809, Colonel on July 6, 1812, and Brigadier General on March 12, 1813. On November 15, 1806, from a point in the Arkansas Valley about 120 miles distant, General Z. M. Pike first saw the peak that now bears his name, and on November 27 he abandoned his attempt to ascend to its summit. He died on April 27, 1813, in an attack on York, later Toronto, Canada, at age 34, and was buried at Madison Barracks, N.Y.
