Heritage Museum of Orange County in Santa Ana, California, developed from an early-1980s effort to create affordable field-trip opportunities for students by using relocated historic buildings on public land. Founded in 1981 as the Exploratory Learning Center, it later became the Discovery Museum of Orange County and then took its current name. Set on about 12 acres and welcoming around 40,000 visitors annually, it centers on the 1898 H. Clay Kellogg House and the 1899 John Maag Farmhouse, along with an adobe house, citrus groves, rose gardens, an urban farm, and a working blacksmith shop. Together, these spaces present Orange County’s domestic, agricultural, and craft history through preserved buildings and active programs.
