Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California, grew from a city-run institution focused on Orange County history into a major art museum with more than 100,000 objects, broad permanent collections, and international special exhibitions. Built on land donated by Ada Elvira Bowers and Charles W. Bowers, with their financial support, its Mission Revival-style building was completed in 1932 and the museum opened in 1936 after delays caused by the Great Depression. Later expansions, nonprofit status, and a wider Pacific Rim-centered mission reshaped it into a cultural institution reflecting Southern California’s diversity, while Kidseum and extensive educational programs extended its reach to children and school audiences.
