Dewey W. Wills Wildlife Management Area is a 63,984-acre protected tract in central Louisiana spanning LaSalle, Catahoula, and Rapides parishes northeast of Alexandria. Renamed in 1978 as its acreage expanded, the area follows a water-shaped landscape along Little River, Catahoula Lake, Little Lake, Saline Lake, and Larto Lake, with the Catahoula Lake Diversion Canal crossing its south-central section. Much of it is bottomland hardwood habitat that supports Louisiana black bears and exceptional birdlife tied to nearby Catahoula Lake, including major concentrations of ducks and shorebirds. Flooding in 2016 and a 2017 court ruling over Catahoula Lake’s status also affected its roads, boundaries, and ownership questions.
