In Korea on 12 September 1951, Sergeant Frederick W. Mausert, III, serving as a squad leader in the 1st Marine Division, repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy fire after his company was pinned down, rescuing two critically wounded Marines, refusing evacuation for his own head wound, leading the assault against a series of bunkers, silencing a machine gun, helping eliminate several more enemy emplacements, and continuing forward despite being severely wounded again until he destroyed another machine gun and was mortally wounded; his valor inspired his men to secure the objective, and he gave his life gallantly for his country.
