Shushan Bridge is a rare surviving covered timber bridge over the Batten Kill in eastern New York and one of only a small number left in the state. Built in 1858 by Milton Stevens, it uses the Town lattice truss, with laminated wooden chords and diagonal planks joined by wooden trunnels, a 19th-century method valued for strength and simplicity. After closing to traffic in 1962, the bridge stood abandoned for about a decade before local preservation efforts saved it. Recognized for its historical importance, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and now serves seasonally as a museum.
