Members of Troop 2, Boy Scouts of America, under the inspiration, direction, and leadership of Scout Master Dee Hays, began cutting logs for this cabin in 1933. Using a cabin design of his own, Dee Hays taught individual scouts of Troop 2 carpentry, masonry, metal work, and pioneering, and through a team approach the raising of the cabin was finished in 1936. The scouts who helped build it were working not only for themselves but for future Boy Scouts who would follow. The cabin stood as an example of scouting as adventure, where each adventure helped a Scout learn to “Be Prepared” by learning all he could. Guided by words such as “Honor” and “Duty,” each Scout gained the guidance needed to grow into a “strong, confident adult.” The “knowledge and attitudes” each Scout developed there would remain with him throughout his life. Many young men would pass through the doorway of the cabin, and the skills learned there would help each Scout become a better and stronger member of society. By living up to the ideals of Scouting, each Scout would develop the character and leadership to become a future leader. At the time of construction, and for many years afterward, the Rotary Club of Visalia sponsored Troop 2.
