Following an earlier emigrant trail, this route was laid out in the 1850’s as part of the Stockton-Los Angeles Road. Butterfield Overland Mail stages used it between St. Louis and San Francisco from 1858 to 1861 in the first overland mail service operated on a regular schedule.
