On Sept. 10, 1959, one of the nation's worst school bus and train disasters occurred at this railroad crossing. Of the 27 children on the bus, seven were killed and 11 sustained moderate to severe injuries. Janet Deem, Nancy Deem, Merle Harvey, Nancy Harvey, Richard Hinkle, Lee Hoffman, and Shirley Lee lost their lives that morning.
