The North American Waterfowl Management Plan is an international effort established in 1986 to conserve waterfowl and migratory birds in North America with support from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Regional partnerships are central to protecting, restoring, and enhancing habitat, and in North Dakota the Chase Lake Prairie Project spans 5.5 million acres across 11 counties. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff work closely with landowners and other partners to develop grazing systems, create and restore wetlands, and enhance grasslands for wildlife. With ninety-seven percent of the project’s land privately owned, its success in restoring and conserving fragile wetland and prairie habitat comes directly from productive partnerships between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local landowners, supporting profitable agriculture, abundant wildlife, and the future of this natural heritage.
