Mount McDowell, more commonly called Red Mountain, is a prominent landmark on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation north of Mesa, Arizona, rising 2,832 feet on the eastern edge of the Phoenix area. Known in O'odham as S-wegĭ Doʼag and in Yavapai as Wi:kawatha, it was named for Union General Irvin McDowell, although its red-rock appearance made Red Mountain the familiar name. Also called FireRock for the glowing red sandstone conglomerate, it is noted for the deep western cleft called Gunsight. Since the early 1980s, vandalism and its location on tribal land have left the mountain closed and protected.
