Buckhorn Hot Mineral Wells, about seven miles east of Mesa, Arizona, developed from a hot spring long used by Indigenous peoples into a notable mid-20th-century mineral bath resort. After buying the property in 1936, Ted and Alice Sliger discovered hot water in 1939 while drilling for drinking water and built a Pueblo Revival-style spa motel, bathhouse, gas station, cabins, and soaking tubs. Promoted for the supposed healing value of its mineral water, the resort reflected the West’s blend of health tourism and roadside travel. The Sligers operated it until 1999, and the site later entered a new phase through preservation and redevelopment efforts.
