For nearly 60 years, a turbine from Unit 3 helped generate power at Bonneville Dam, providing jobs during the Great Depression, helping supply electricity to build aircraft and ships for World War II, and later supporting the growth and prosperity of the Northwest economy. While operating, it continuously helped generate power for about 25,000 homes. It entered service on 9 January 1941 and was taken out of service for replacement on 24 July 2000 after 59.5 years in service. It rotated at 75 revolutions per minute, generated 22,159,657,000 kilowatt hours of electricity over its lifetime, used 96,000 gallons of water a second for generation, weighed 123 tons, and produced 74,000 horsepower. Manufactured by S. Morgan Smith, its outer edges moved 663,600 feet an hour and, at an average of 7,900 hours in service each year, traveled more than 59 million miles, more than 100 round trips to the moon.
