Matterhorn Peak
Nature
Matterhorn Peak is a 13,596-foot mountain in southwestern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, within the Rocky Mountains and the Uncompahgre Wilderness of Uncompahgre National Forest near Lake City. A Colorado thirteener, it rises above 13,000 feet and is especially notable for its pointed rock-spire shape, which contrasts with the broader form of nearby Uncompahgre Peak. Its name, along with neighboring Wetterhorn Peak, was borrowed from famous peaks in the Swiss Alps. That choice reflects the summit’s sharp, dramatic profile, which gives this part of the San Juans a distinctly jagged character.
