The Uncompahgre Wilderness is a protected mountain area in southwestern Colorado within the Uncompahgre National Forest, spanning 102,721 acres near Lake City and Ouray. Formerly known as the Big Blue Wilderness, it was renamed for Uncompahgre Peak, whose 14,309-foot summit is the highest in the San Juan range; Wetterhorn Peak also rises above 14,000 feet, giving the area a strongly alpine character. The wilderness is also known for debate over the Robin Redbreast Gold Mine, a claim staked in 1938 and preserved under the General Mining Act of 1872, which has highlighted tensions between historic mineral rights, conservation rules, and concerns about environmental damage.
