Wetterhorn Peak is a Colorado fourteener in the Uncompahgre Wilderness of the northern San Juan Mountains, near Ouray and Uncompahgre Peak. Named from the German for “weather horn,” it and nearby Matterhorn Peak took both name and visual inspiration from famous summits in the Swiss Alps. Its pointed rock spire stands out sharply against the broader bulk of Uncompahgre Peak. The first recorded ascent came in 1906 by George Barnard, C. Smedley, W. P. Smedley, and D. Utter, though local miners likely climbed it earlier. Wetterhorn remains notable for its striking form and for a standard summit route that is more exposed and technical than many Colorado fourteeners.
