This eight-room Greek Revival house was built in 1843 for Thomas Shaw, his wife Hannah, and their three children. The Shaw family came from the village of Wysall, Nottinghamshire, England, and decided to move to America so they could own their own land. A rain delay near Plymouth Corners led to events that caused the Shaws to remain in Michigan. Thomas had bought 80 acres in section 18 in 1836, and after prospering in America, he found a workman to build the house. The farm remained in the family until the early 1920s. A distinctive feature of the home is its spiral staircase, the first architectural feature seen upon entering; it is 57 feet wide and 53 feet deep with 12 steps, and it is nearly perpendicular, similar to a ladder. The house was originally located on Six Mile Road, west of Newburgh Road in section 18.
