At Delphi on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the Temple of Apollo stood at the heart of one of the Greek world’s holiest Panhellenic sanctuaries, approached by the Sacred Way and associated with the omphalos, the world’s “navel.” The visible ruins are mainly from a Doric temple rebuilt in the 4th century BCE after an earthquake, following earlier sanctuaries and a stone predecessor destroyed in 548 BCE. Within it lay the spaces tied to the famous Delphic oracle, where the Pythia was believed to receive Apollo’s prophecies. Revered across the Mediterranean, the sanctuary shaped Greek religious life, politics, and legend until its destruction in 390 CE.
