On September 16, 1776, about four miles above this place, the Escalante expedition crossed the Green River, which they called San Buenaventura, while traveling from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Monterey, California. The party consisted of Fray Francisco Atanasio Dominguez, Fray Francisco Silvestre Velez de Escalante, Don Juan Pedro Cisneros, Don Bernardo Miera y Pacheco, Don Jauquin Lain, Lorenzo Olivares, Andres Munez, Lucrecio Munez, Juan Aguilar, and Simon Lucero.
