Sarah Mitchell Thompson, first cousin and best friend of Nancy Hanks Lincoln, mother of President Lincoln, is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Abducted by Native Americans near Crab Orchard, Kentucky, she was released from captivity in 1795 near Detroit. She was returned to her aunt and uncle, Rachel and Richard Berry Sr., at Beechland, Washington County, Kentucky, after her mother, Naomi Shipley Mitchell, was massacred in the raid at Crab Orchard and her father, Robert, drowned in the Licking River in pursuit of Sarah. Sarah lived for five years with Nancy Hanks in the Berry home until her marriage to John Thompson in 1800.
