The Spanish returned to New Mexico twelve years after the 1680 Pueblo Revolt. The remains here are of the smaller church completed in 1717. Pecos Pueblo had entered a long decline because of disease, famine, and raids, and over time the Pecos people dispersed. The few remaining pueblo residents left in 1838 to join other Towa speakers at Jemez. Every August, members of Saint Anthony's parish in the village of Pecos and the Pueblo of Jemez bring a painting of the patron saint, Nuestra Senora de los Angeles, Our Lady of the Angels, here for a feast day mass celebration. The sanctuary featured a painting of Pecos' patron saint, Nuestra Senora de los Angeles, Our Lady of the Angels, above the altar.
