Pecos was one of the largest and most powerful pueblos in northern New Mexico when the Spanish established a mission there. A few years later, in 1625, the first church was completed, and remnants of its foundation remain. The arrival of the Spanish brought sweeping changes that drastically altered the lives of the Pecos people.
