During the Civil War, twenty-two Kentucky courthouses were burned, nineteen of them in the last fifteen months, with twelve burned by Confederates, eight by guerrillas, and two by Union accident. On Dec. 24, 1864, a contingent of CSA Gen. Lyon's force, ordered to harass and delay pursuing Union troops, burned the courthouse at Leitchfield, destroying its records.
