Zigzag Ranger Station, in the community of Zigzag within Oregon’s Mount Hood National Forest, was established in 1917 as the administrative headquarters of the Zigzag Ranger District and still serves that purpose. Developed as an early Forest Service district base where staff could live and work near patrols, projects, and fire crews, it expanded in the 1920s and became part of Mount Hood National Forest in 1924. Its historic character is chiefly defined by Civilian Conservation Corps construction from 1933 to 1942, which produced rustic-style buildings that remain in use. The compound also includes the Wy’East Rhododendron Gardens and preserves an unusually complete early Forest Service headquarters.
