John A. Bingham was born in Mercer in 1815, and this house was his boyhood home. He served as Judge Advocate at the trial of the conspirators in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, represented Ohio in Congress, served as United States Ambassador to Japan, and was counsel in the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson.
