Cerro de las Burras is a 4,349-foot summit in far West Texas within Big Bend Ranch State Park, rising steeply above the Rio Grande in the Chihuahuan Desert. Formed from basalt and tuff about 27.1 million years ago over older conglomerate and sandstone about 32 million years old, it has a notably prominent profile, climbing 1,870 feet above the river in roughly two miles. Charles Christopher Parry visited it on August 24, 1852, during the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey, tying it to the mapping of the border region. Its Spanish name, officially recognized, means “Jenny Hill,” and its rare runoff drains toward the Rio Grande.
