Robert Twigg was the first Twigg to acquire land in what is now Allegany County, Maryland, purchasing in 1768 a tract known as Sink Hole Bottom. On this site, Austin D. Twigg (1863-1941) operated the Twiggtown General Store and Post Office as proprietor and postmaster. Much of this land remains in the hands of Twigg descendants, making it one of the oldest continuous family landholdings in Allegany County.
