In Morris, Illinois, this archaeological site preserves the remains of seven canal boats sunk in the Illinois and Michigan Canal, offering a rare record of nineteenth-century inland transport in the state. Likely built between 1865 and 1885 and abandoned between 1895 and 1915, the flat-bottomed boats with rounded bows and sterns gradually sank after being left there. Their hulls remain in good condition, providing valuable evidence of how canal boats of the era were built. Storms in 1978 and 1996 exposed the remains for study, and because no fully intact Illinois canal boats of this period are known to survive, the site gained listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
