The Hayduke Trail is an 812-mile backpacking route across southern Utah and northern Arizona that links major Colorado Plateau landscapes including Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon, and Zion. Entirely on public land, it is not a maintained or signed trail but a demanding wilderness route that follows ridgelines, drainages, foot and game trails, dirt roads, and river stretches. Its elevation ranges from about 1,800 feet in the Grand Canyon to 11,419 feet on Mount Ellen in the Henry Mountains. Created by Utah hikers Mike Coronella and Joe Mitchell, it was named for George Washington Hayduke from Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang.
