Mount Ellen, in the Henry Mountains of southern Utah, is the range’s highest point and the highest point in Garfield County. Its great isolation and more than 1,500 metres of prominence make it a striking landmark visible from far across the region. The mountain lies in the Fremont River watershed, part of a drainage system that ultimately reaches the Colorado River and the Gulf of California. Known earlier by the Paiute name Un tar re and also as First Mountain, it was named by Almon Harris Thompson in June 1872 for his wife, Ellen Powell Thompson. In September 1895, it was the site of a world-record heliograph exchange with Mount Uncompahgre in Colorado.
