Mark Twain State Park is a 2,788-acre public recreation area on Mark Twain Lake in Monroe County, northeastern Missouri, known for boating, shoreline activities, hiking trails, and campgrounds that support longer stays. Its setting beside the Mark Twain Birthplace State Historic Site ties outdoor recreation to the early life of Samuel Clemens, giving the park significance beyond a typical lake destination. A notable historic feature is the stone picnic shelter at Buzzard’s Roost, built around 1941 by an all African-American Civilian Conservation Corps company in a rustic style. The shelter was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
