The Crigler Mound Group is an important archaeological site in northeastern Missouri’s Salt River valley near Florida and Mark Twain Lake. Located on a high hilltop near the original Salt River bed, it includes seven large burial mounds spread in a straight northwest-trending line across nearly 500 feet, with forms ranging from circular and flat-topped earthworks to one mound containing substantial rock. By the 1960s it was considered the largest and best-preserved mound group in the area threatened by the proposed Joanna Reservoir. Because little excavation occurred, the site retained strong archaeological value and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
