Below this bridge stood the first lock and dam built on the Ohio River, constructed from 1878 to 1885. It was the world's largest movable dam yet constructed and included the world's first rolling lock gate and the widest lock chamber. It was built and operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and was replaced by the nearby Emsworth Locks and Dams in 1922.
