A branch of the Great Indian War and Trading Path came up the valley of this creek, which was named for a Virginia trader killed by Indians in 1775. Colonel William Christian's punitive expedition used the route in 1776, crossing the French Broad River. John Sevier broke the Indian resistance at Cedar Springs in 1780, and the first settlers came in 1783.
