Pioneer railroad planner John A. Poor’s dream of an international railway connecting Montreal, Canada, with the ice-free harbor of Portland, Maine, became a reality on July 18, 1853, when the first through trains met at Island Pond, a great halfway point on the Grand Trunk Railway.
