Mesa Grande, now known as Sce:dagĭ Mu:val Va’aki, preserves a major Hohokam site in Mesa, Arizona, occupied from about AD 1100 to 1400 during the Classic Period. One of only two surviving Hohokam platform mounds in the Phoenix metropolitan area, it includes a large mound built of adobe walls and raised platforms and is notable for the intact condition of its ruins and surrounding setting. The Hohokam communities of the Salt River Valley sustained large desert settlements through an extensive canal system. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, the site came under city ownership in 1988 and remains a place of archaeological study and seasonal public access.
