Point No Point Light, a lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay north of the Potomac River’s mouth, was built to improve navigation along a thirty-mile section of the bay between Cove Point and Smith Point. Proposed in 1891 but not funded until 1901, it required a pneumatic caisson because of its exposed site. Construction suffered major setbacks when temporary piers failed and the caisson was damaged and set adrift, yet the structure endured and the light began operating on April 24, 1905. Automated in 1938 and staffed until 1962, it later deteriorated, underwent stabilization work from 1989 to 2001, and entered an unsuccessful disposal process in 2006–2008.
