Salem (Black River) Presbyterian Church, commonly called Brick Church, was founded by Scotch-Irish settlers in 1759 on land given by Capt. David Anderson. Its original log meeting-house was replaced by a frame building in 1768 and named Salem Presbyterian Church. The first brick church was built in 1802 and remained in use until 1846, when the present church was constructed of brick made on the grounds. An old session house dating to 1846 stands at the rear and contains a large library given by James McBride in 1862. The cemetery dates from 1794, and its land was deeded by Robert Witherspoon in 1830. Among the notable ministers who served the church was Dr. Thomas Reese, a scholar, teacher, and preacher before the Revolution. In 1867 Negro members withdrew to form Goodwill Presbyterian Church.
