Rich Mountain is a 4,040-foot peak in north Georgia’s Chattahoochee National Forest, in northeastern Gilmer County near Cherry Log and Ellijay. Its summit lies within both the Rich Mountain Wilderness and the Rich Mountain Wildlife Management Area, and the mountain gives its name to the surrounding Rich Mountains, whose ridges and valleys radiate outward from it. Known for deep porter’s loam and second-growth hardwood forest, the area includes nearby Big Bald Mountain, the county’s only higher summit. Rich Mountain is the wilderness’s highest point and, by a 160-foot prominence rule, Georgia’s 21st tallest mountain. A Civilian Conservation Corps fire tower once stood on the summit.
