Rich Mountain Wilderness is a protected area in north Georgia’s Chattahoochee National Forest, designated in 1986 and managed by the United States Forest Service within the National Wilderness Preservation System. Encompassing 9,476 acres of the larger Rich Mountains, it reaches the 4,050-foot summit of Rich Mountain, the area’s highest point. The landscape is distinguished by deep, black porter’s loam like that of the Cohutta Mountains and supports several threatened or endangered species. Its importance lies in preserving a substantial portion of the Rich Mountains in a largely undeveloped condition.
