Imes Bridge in Saint Charles, Iowa, is the oldest surviving covered bridge in Madison County and one of the historic spans for which the county is known. Built in 1870, the 81-foot wooden bridge has been preserved through repeated relocation rather than abandoned as transportation needs changed. It first crossed the Middle River, was moved in 1887 to Clinton Creek, and in 1977 was moved again to its current site spanning a ravine south of County Road G50 west of Interstate 35. Renovated in 1997, it remains a preserved example of Iowa’s nineteenth-century covered bridge building tradition.
