Mazama Glacier occupies the north slopes of Mount Baker in Washington’s North Cascades, between Park Glacier and Rainbow Glacier on the volcano’s upper flanks. Named for the Mazamas mountaineering organization of Portland, Oregon, it illustrates the changing ice conditions of the range. Between 1850 and 1950, the glacier retreated about 7,700 feet. During a cooler, wetter period from 1950 to 1979, it advanced roughly 1,476 feet, then retreated again by about 1,509 feet between 1980 and 2006. Its changing extent makes it a clear example of glacier advance and retreat on Mount Baker and in the broader North Cascades.
