Sholes Glacier lies on the northeast slopes of Mount Baker in Washington’s North Cascades, north of the ridge called The Portals, in steep volcanic terrain shaped by snow and ice. Its recorded history mirrors broader glacier change in the region: it retreated 3,838 feet between 1850 and 1950, advanced 187 feet during a cooler, wetter period from 1950 to 1979, and then retreated another 278 feet from 1980 to 2006. Named for Charles H. Sholes, an early-1900s president of the Mazamas, the glacier remains one of Mount Baker’s named glaciers and an indicator of long-term environmental change in the North Cascades.
