First County Seat / Fort Minear
Military
Here stood Tucker’s first courthouse, over which a Confederate flag was raised in May 1861. During the Civil War, the town changed sides ten times. The "County Seat War" ended on Aug 1, 1893, when armed men removed the records. Fort Minear was erected by John Minear in 1776, and he and a group of immigrants later founded St. George. The settlement was the site of American Indian raids in the spring of 1780, and Minear and his son Jonathan were among those killed in an 1781 attack.
