Baraga’s love of the Lord was so great that he was often moved to tears during the celebration of the Holy Mass, and his beautiful and holy example inspired his beloved Indian children to make for him a set of vestments from deerskin. From the surrounding forest and terrain they obtained the animal hide, the various dyes, and the copper rubbed embossing, and they executed intricate and beautiful designs on these garments for their dear “Blackrobe Father” to wear. One such set of vestments, completed in 1851, remains intact, though fragile, at St. Peter's Cathedral in Marquette, Michigan. This testimony of the unceasing love of the Indians for Father Baraga, and of gratitude for his holy inspirations, is also a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Baraga’s total dedication to the salvation of souls brought forth the best in the Indians whose culture he recognized and nurtured.
