The bell originally hung with the clock in the old city hall tower at 255 Main Street. In 1958, the municipal building was erected at this site. Through a joint effort, city administration funds and donations of money, service, and material from citizens made possible placing the bell here and erecting a flagpole to fly the flag of the country. The first flag was donated by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This area was dedicated to the memory and generosity of the citizens on the tenth day of November, 1963, under Mayor John S. Roth. The bell was first rung at this site during the memorial service for President John F. Kennedy on November 25, 1963.
