Herman Davis enlisted on March 14th 1918 and was honorably discharged on May 29th 1919. He was cited for bravery and extraordinary heroism in action and was decorated with the U.S. Distinguished Service Cross on Oct. 10th 1918, the French Croix de Guerre with Palm on Apr. 19th 1919, a Gilt Star for the Croix de Guerre on Apr. 23rd 1919, and the French Medaille Militaire on May 10th 1919. He was praised as a most courageous runner who singlehandedly attacked a machine gun nest that was preventing the advance of his platoon and killed the four gunners. His captain called him the smallest but bravest and best liked man in his company.
