Morgan Hill is a mountain in central New York north-northeast of Truxton, mostly in Cortland County with a small section in Onondaga County that forms that county’s highest point. Much or all of the mountain, including its summit, lies within Morgan Hill State Forest. Its modern significance also includes a conservation-era fire lookout tower built in 1940 by Civilian Conservation Corps camp S-103 of DeRuyter. The 82.5-foot steel tower served in the regional forest-fire detection system until 1970, when aerial detection reduced the need for such lookouts, and it was removed in 1978. Morgan Hill thus joins a local geographic distinction with a remnant story of New York forestry and CCC public works.
